Reality job shows hype the drama a bit too much

A couple of cable channels have shows on that show people doing jobs that can be dangerous. The History Channel has Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men while Discovery Channel has Deadliest Catch. The shows are interesting because you get to see a job maybe you never knew existed and the people who do them. Too bad the shows try to create drama more often than it really happens.

The narrator breathlessly describes the scene and then it turns out not to be as dangerous as hyped. On an episode of a new show Deep Sea Salvage, on the History Channel, the task was moving a beached barge back into the water but it was too long for the standard technique – it could sling shot into the canal, slam into other barges and in the words of the narrator – cause a catastrophic disaster…. or words to that effect.

The salvage crew doesn’t use the usual technique and all goes well – no disaster….. DANG!…..

Most jobs, no matter what they are, lacks drama every day but that wouldn’t support a TV show.

Conservatives losing the debate makes them show their ass

You would think that when a political debate involved adults, that there would be a civil debate about issues. If either side resorts to name calling then they have lost the debate. Conservatives know they have lost the debate on many current issues like the upcoming health care reform, so they resort to name calling and basic racist banter. Then when you call them on it they cry about “freedom of speech”. I agree they should be allowed to say what they want – even when it shows how much of an ass they really are.

A good example was a recent e-mail that was sent out with a picture of President Obama with a bone in his nose:

And then this morning someone forwarded me this email, which as far as I know is unrelated to the Malkin contest BUT follows a similar vein AND has been “making the rounds,” as the kids say, under the subject line Obamacare Healthcare is coming soon!

That’s right, folks! Barack Obama will tax your health benefits and then flee with the money to Africa, where he will convert all the tribespeople to Socialism and become their king after developing inhumanly muscular calves.

The Health Care Debate is Unleashing Creativity from Every Crevice of America

Then there was this:

“A typical street whore.” “A bunch of ghetto thugs.” “Ghetto street trash.” “Wonder when she will get her first abortion.”

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative ‘Free Republic’ blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama’s 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a T-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, “To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds.”

And that happened after Conservatives basically accused comedian David Letterman of being a pedophile for telling a bad joke about Sarah Palin’s daughter – never mind that the joke was about the 18 year old daughter and not the 14 year old daughter the Conservatives tried to pin it on.

But like I said when you have no real answers to the policy debate it is easier just to call people names. I mean it worked in school – right?

Weekend Ear Candy: Jackson 5’s “ABC” and Clerks 2

Until I saw it on YouTube I had forgotten about the dance routine in the middle of the film Clerks 2 – the follow up to the cult classic Clerks by Kevin Smith. The song is one of my favorite Jackson 5 songs and the routine in such a recent film is tribute to the Jacksons and Michael.

The first 20 seconds or so isn’t office or family friendly language wise……. just turn down the sound until you see Jay and Silent Bob with the boombox.

Jon Stewart falls for “lone wolf” ruse

On the Tuesday edition of the Daily Show, host Jon Stewart had a segment about the cable channels reaction to the shooting at the US Holocaust Museum. He attempted to ridicule MSNBC’s blaming the right and the pundits Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Rielly blaming the left for setting off the alleged shooter. Unfortunately, Stewart and his writers missed the point of those reports and bought into the mainstream reporting that the shooter was a “lone wolf” crazy person.

There have been several killings by people later linked to right wing extremism. I know their extreme views didn’t kill the people – the people who pulled the trigger did – but think what it is like to listen the recent increase in Doomsday talk by the stars of right wing talk shows like Limbaugh and O’Reilly.

Everyday your warped view of the world is validated by the people you listen to on the TV and radio and you get to the point where you HAVE to do something. So while people like Limbaugh and O’Reilly didn’t kill anyone – their rhetoric – which has been more shrill since Obama took office – creates the powder keg and match that sets off people like the museum shooter who are not very rational in the first place.

The whole time Bush Jr. was in office I can’t think of any domestic terrorist killings happening because he was in office or from people irrationally afraid of his policies.

Weekend Ear Candy – Ben Folds Five

The band Ben Folds Five was really a power pop trio from North Carolina that had a hit with the ballad “Brick” in 1997. They broke up in 2000. I liked their more energetic music such as this weeks weekend ear candy titled “Army” I just love horns in songs although in this live performance, the horn section isn’t a good fit on the song. The actual recording is better.
